The majority of the apartment housing at the AJ is market-rate housing. However, a percentage of the AJ units are designated as affordable housing—for residents who earn 50% or less of the area median income for Sacramento County, currently $35,500 for a one-person household.

Close to Downtown, DOCO and the Golden 1 Center, the Old Sacramento Waterfront, the Sacramento Valley Station, and the State Capital, the AJ's location puts you in close proximity to Sacramento's thriving city scene.
The Railyards development is adjacent to Sacramento's historic Alkali and Mansion Flats neighborhoods, some of the City's oldest neighborhoods featuring original buildings from the 1850s.
Who is the AJ Named For?
The Railyards' first residential community is named for A.J. Stevens, known as the "Father of Innovation" at the Sacramento Railyards in the late 1800s.
Andrew Jackson Stevens invented and patented a wide variety of mechanical inventions, including locomotive parts, a steam-powered fire engine that was built in Sacramento, and a ferry boat whose boilers and engines were built in the Sacramento Central Shops.
After his death in 1888, 2,000 workers marched in the streets to mourn his passing. Fellow railroad workers who had toiled alongside Stevens took up a fund, raising enough money to gift a large graveside granite monument to his family and erect a nine-foot tall statue of Stevens, placed on a twenty-foot granite base, at a J Street location in Sacramento.
An inscription on the statue's base reads:
"Erected to a friend of labor by his coworkers, Nov. 28, 1889"
