Sacramento’s Downtown Specific Plan Aims to Transform City

March 10, 2017 | By The Railyards

In 2015, the City of Sacramento launched the Downtown Housing Initiative. This ambitious plan aims to add 10,000 new housing units to Downtown Sacramento over the next ten years. The initiative, set in motion by former Mayor Kevin Johnson, plans to re-energize the downtown area into a vibrant, pedestrian-oriented, urban neighborhood.

Now, the City of Sacramento is looking to expand this plan even further with the Downtown Specific Plan, which looks at growth opportunities for the area over the next twenty years and beyond.

The goals of the Downtown Specific Plan include:

  • Create a Specific Plan that paves the way for at least 10,000 places to live in the next 10 years (Downtown Housing Initiative)
  • Develop a varied housing stock that reflects the diversity of Sacramento
  • Incentivize Transit-Oriented Development throughout downtown Sacramento including along the streetcar corridor
  • Remove barriers to housing development by streamlining the development and environmental review process
  • Maintain the quality of life central city residents experience and further neighborhood livability by including supporting amenities along with housing

Get Involved: Downtown Specific Plan Survey and Meeting

Community involvement is essential as the City of Sacramento looks to build a future as a vibrant, mixed use urban community. From now until March 10, 2017, you can take the Downtown Specific Plan Survey online and help shape this plan.

On Monday, March 20, you are invited to join the conversation at a community open house event to discuss topics ranging from community amenities, historic preservation, arts and culture, and public health as they relate to housing in Downtown Sacramento. This is your opportunity to ask questions and give feedback to project team members and City officials.

The open house will take place on March 20, 2017, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at New City Hall Lobby, 915 I Street, Sacramento.

The Downtown Specific Plan launched in the summer of 2016 and will continue into early 2018. When it is complete, the plan will provide greater details for where the housing will be located, what it will look like, how it will integrate with transit and other mobility options, desired amenities to support additional residents, needed infrastructure improvements, and how the infrastructure will be paid for.

The City of Sacramento is looking to a future of new development projects that will make the Capital City a revitalized, urban area. The Downtown Specific Plan’s 10,000 residential housing units will join additional current and emerging projects planned for Downtown Sacramento including The Railyards700 Block of K Street, the Golden 1 Center, and more.
