The Railyards will bring thousands of Sacramento jobs to the region, according to a new economic impact report.
One of the key principles driving The Railyards is to strengthen downtown Sacramento as a major employment hub by fostering employment growth and creating thousands of new Sacramento jobs in industries such as healthcare, business services, hospitality, and entertainment.
A comprehensive analysis prepared by Stantec, utilizing data from Economic & Planning Systems, Inc. (EPS), highlights the significant economic and job creation opportunity of the Sacramento Railyards, which is expected to drive 23,947 total jobs across the region.
Thousands of Sacramento Jobs Expected from Railyards Development
The Sacramento Railyards has completed projects such as the Wong Center, with 150 senior affordable housing units, and The AJ residential project, with 345 units (including 69 affordable housing units) in the development area. The Sacramento Courthouse is near completion, and construction has broken ground at Kaiser Permanente’s 18-acre medical campus. Wilton Rancheria has taken majority ownership of the Republic FC team and has announced a goal of constructing the soccer stadium by 2027.
Employment Impact of The Railyards
The latest Economic Impact Analysis (EIA) highlights substantial benefits across multiple sectors, including job creation, increased fiscal revenues, and long-term regional vitality, from these and other upcoming projects.
Among its findings, by buildout, the redevelopment is projected to generate
- 23,947 total regional jobs throughout Sacramento County
- 13,563 on-site jobs in sectors such as healthcare, hospitality, retail, and professional services
- $2.1 billion in annual wages across Sacramento County
Jobs at Sacramento Republic Stadium
Construction of the Sacramento Republic FC stadium is estimated to support 1,159 total jobs, including 800 direct construction jobs. Once construction is completed, the stadium is estimated to create 49 direct stadium jobs and 71 total jobs, generating $4 million in annual wages.
Jobs at the Central Shops
The adaptive reuse of the historically significant Central Shops will bring jobs and economic benefits to Sacramento. The Paint Shop Event Venue alone is expected to create hundreds of direct and indirect employment opportunities, ranging from hospitality and event staff to retail and business operations supporting the venue’s activities.
The Central Shops District will support 1,682 total jobs, including 1,359 direct positions. The Central Shops District is expected to generate $63.3 million in annual wages and $157.8 million in annual economic output.
Jobs at Kaiser Permanente Medical Campus
The Kaiser Permanente medical campus will serve as a major healthcare and employment anchor within the Railyards, driving economic growth, job creation, and expanded healthcare access for Sacramento and the broader region.
The hospital development will directly support 3,100 jobs, with a total employment impact of 5,961 jobs throughout Sacramento County. It will generate $668.4 million in wages and $1.39 billion in annual economic output, solidifying Sacramento’s status as a healthcare hub.
Construction Jobs at The Railyards
The construction phase of The Railyards will serve as a major short-term economic driver, stimulating job creation and investment and supporting thousands of workers and businesses.
The construction phase is anticipated to create 39,066 total construction jobs in Sacramento, including 26,602 direct on-site jobs, and $3.09 billion total paid in wages, benefiting workers across the construction supply chain.
Investments in state park assets and infrastructure will generate economic activity through tourism, construction, and long-term urban resilience.
- One-time construction impacts from state park and open space investments are expected to generate $12.1 million in economic output, supporting 96 indirect jobs and 19 induced jobs.
- One-time construction impacts from infrastructure investments are expected to generate $124.3 million in economic output, supporting 788 indirect jobs and 160 induced jobs.

The Railyards development is expected to provide 13,563 direct on-site jobs and 23,947 total jobs across the region during both the construction phase and after completion. Available job openings will span various industries, including construction, healthcare, retail, hospitality, entertainment, professional services, and more. The Railyards will also create opportunities for local businesses that want to utilize available office and retail space. With thousands of jobs resulting in $2.11 billion in annual wages across Sacramento County, The Railyards is driving economic growth and job creation in the Sacramento region.
