The origins of The Railyards are the origins of rail travel in California. The completion of the Transcontinental Railroad was one of the most significant events in the history of California and the nation, and it all started here in the Sacramento Central Shops. The Railyards and its shops were the largest industrial site west of the Mississippi until the end of WWII and for a time the railroads were the primary employer for residents of the region. Today, these historic buildings are being preserved and adaptively reused to meet the needs of a new generation, while still remaining true to their historic legacy and the roots of The Railyards.

The Railyards development is strongly connected to its roots and celebrates the significance that the buildings and land played in the history of Sacramento, California, and the nation. Discover the ways The Railyards is preserving its history and its landmarks for the benefit of the community.
